Julia’s Public History Portfolio

Hello everyone! I’m proud to present my academic portfolio!

Ever since I had decided that I wanted to pursue historical research at the tender age of 21, I’ve made it my lifes’ goal to learn as much history and the umbrella it encompasses can offer. Since receiving my Bachelor’s degree in history and English literature in 2004, earning a living had taken precedence over historical research. In 2017, having spent enough time away from academia, I decided to obtain my Master’s degree in public history (interests in museum studies and digital archiving) from American Public University. Six years, a marriage, a new business and a pandemic later, I am in the final stages of this goal. I am currently working with Hawaii Mission Houses Historic Site and Archives as a volunteer, in all departments a hand is needed, gaining much needed experience and the opportunity to immerse myself in Hawaiian history. Being a woman of color gives me a unique perspective, add that to being born and raised in Hawaii expounds that perspective even further. I am excited for the next few months as I learn all things museum from theatre tour guide and student educator, to taking care of collections, and from marketing and advertising events to helping out in the gift shop. I will be updating my progress here over the next few months.

I hope you enjoy my portfolio.
